Spring 2019 One Room Challenge: Week One

Hello, friends!

I can't tell you how excited I am to be among the incredible 20 Featured Designers in this ORC. I've been following along for years and finally designed my first space, our dining room, as a last-minute guest entry two years ago.

Since then, I've done two more spaces: our master bedroom and walk-in closet, and my oldest son's bedroom.

This time, we are transforming our whole open-plan main floor. As in living/dining/kitchen. Crazy or clever? Follow along to find out...I'm as curious to see how it all turns out as you are. Hahaha! I have big plans for custom elements, including some DIY projects that I'm really excited about, mostly because Jamie agreed to do a ton of the work with me.

I honestly have a few rooms I could have chosen, but I work from home a lot these days and I'm tired of my view. Even though I did our dining room (which has since changed again), the kitchen and living room have not been touched since we moved in four years ago. The dark cabinets (that my friends call grey, but I see as brown) don't work with my love of white and pastels. We need space for our family to work, watch TV, play boardgames, eat as a family of six, and entertain. The kitchen does not have enough storage for a house full of guys. Not even close. We also have a rather large (says me....too small says Jamie) TV to contend with in the living room.

Believe it or not, our home is a rental, but our landlord is amazing. He gave me permission to transform the cabinets, countertops and more. But before I get to the plans for the space, here are some before shots. I’m only sharing befores if the kitchen and dining room today. The living room is coming next week with the design plan. A gal can’t reveal everything in the first post.

You‘ll notice as you scroll, there is an overwhelming amount of brown (including the mark on the wall where the recycle bin scraped it). There’s an empty space at the end of the kitchen where I’ve placed a desk that never gets used.

The dining room looked like this when I did it for the ORC in 2017, but I had a holiday shoot last winter and needed a larger table.

So I brought our outdoor table, chairs and rug inside. I love it so much, that it’s all stayed. Not much will be changing over here but since it opens to the living room and kitchen, it’s an important part of the plan.
